However, as she soon finds out, her journey to success came with some side effects, most notably the loss of her closest friend and secret admirer, Matty, with whom she had ceased communication. 

Along with gradually falling in love with Matty, Jenna embarks on a self-discovery journey and determines what her priorities are in life. 

2. Alex Strangelove (2018)

While the story of a popular teen struggling with his sexuality in a coming-of-age romantic comedy may sound familiar, Alex Strangelove gives it a unique twist. 

For a high school story, Alex Truelove lives in a particularly progressive and accepting environment that is almost devoid of the prevalent prejudices against queerness. 

Alex is unsure of who or what he wants, and before he can be certain, he needs to discover more about himself. 

3. Along for the Ride (2022)

Night owl Auden, who goes to live with her absentee father, his wife, and their newborn during the summer before college, offends her type-A mother, according to the novel by Sarah Dessen. 

Auden soon forms her first real group of girlfriends and spends the early hours of the morning exploring the beach town, driven by her mission to experience all the teenage experiences she has missed out on.

By doing this, she meets Eli, a fellow night owl with his own suppressed past. Given that she turned To All the Boys I’ve Loved Before into the wildly successful Netflix film franchise, Sofia Alvarez is no stranger to teen romances. 

4. Always Be My Maybe (2019)

Who says you can’t return home? In this romantic comedy, which centers on childhood best friends who reunite as adults after a disastrous teenage romance, Ali Wong excels. 

After sixteen years, Sasha Tran, the famous chef, and Marcus Kim, the unsuccessful musician, have found themselves in very different places in life. 

As they confront their numerous differences and work toward reconciliation, a lot has changed, but their chemistry hasn’t. 

5. The Half of It (2020)

In a contemporary adaptation of the beloved French drama Cyrano de Bergerac, Ellie begins penning love letters for jock Paul in return for some much-needed money. 

But as Ellie keeps writing to Aster, Paul’s ideal woman, she discovers they have a lot in common and starts to question whether or not she’s her true love. 

The developing friendship between Ellie and Paul is the real core of this tale, even though the film is propelled forward by the romantic tension between the naïve Aster and the unfortunate Ellie. 

6. The Holiday (2006)

Nancy Meyers and Christmas is a match made in movie heaven. In this lovely romantic comedy, Amanda and Iris play two women who are having relationship troubles and decide to switch houses for a vacation to get away from it all. 

While Iris strikes up a conversation with Miles, the film composer, Amanda strikes up with Iris’s brother Graham, the book editor. 

This movie is all about taking stock of your life and finding a way forward, even if it means temporarily disappearing into a different world. Christmas can be a time for reflection.

7. The Incredible Jessica James (2017)

In her first leading role, Jessica Williams (2 Dope Queens, Shrinking) is a relatable force to be reckoned with. With New York City serving as the backdrop, Jessica James, a super-confident person, is attempting to figure out what’s next in both her professional and romantic lives. 

Though she’s still not over her ex-boyfriend Damon, a blind date throws a wrench in all of her plans when she finds herself unexpectedly falling for Boone. 

The protagonist of The Incredible Jessica James is anything but conventional, although the love story at its core occasionally comes across as such. Jessica is a happy, strong woman who owns up to her mistakes and doesn’t punish herself for them. 

8. It’s Complicated (2009)

Master of Rom-Coms With this playful romp, Nancy Meyers offered yet another perspective on middle-aged romantic relationships. 

Meryl Streep plays Jane, a successful bakery owner who has a secret affair with her ten-year-old husband Jake while keeping their kids in the dark.

In the meantime, Jane is also having feelings for Adam, an architect, which creates a complicated love triangle.  

9. Long Shot (2019)

Girl watches boy; boy develops a crush on her; girl becomes Secretary of State; boy loses his job as a journalist; and finally, the boy and girl get back together when she hires him to write her speeches. 

Even though the plot of Long Shot isn’t the most traditional, a lot of its attraction comes from watching Seth Rogen and Charlize Theron interact. “Rogen and Theron’s chemistry is as fizzy as a Red Bull-and-Champagne cocktail,” the critic for EW observed. 

At the heart of the movie is a moving tale about the difficulties of finding love while in the spotlight and upholding your morals, despite its coarser aspects. 

10. The Lovebirds (2020)

When Leilani (Issa Rae) and Jibran (Kumail Nanjiani), a troubled couple, receive an invitation to a dinner party, their relationship is already in its final stages and rapidly deteriorating.

A fortuitous run-in with a criminal on their way there alters the plan for the evening and ends their relationship. 

The two will have to cooperate if they hope to survive and clear their names, but not before hurling a few passive-aggressive barbs at one another. The Lovebirds presents an alternative version of a second-chance romance to viewers. 

It’s an honest depiction of everything that can make or break a relationship, romantic or not, with a heavy emphasis on antics rather than romance.
